Good Luck

Over the next few weeks many WKHS students will be taking Advanced Placement and IB Exams. The AP and IB exams are held on designated days and will be in various locations throughout WKHS.  I know  many of you have been spending an extraordinary amount of time studying to prepare for the exams. Good Luck!  You will do great!  Remember, you have spent the whole year learning all of the content that you need to know in order to take the tests to hopefully earn the college credit. Stop by sometime and let me know how you felt after the tests.

For the rest of the students, be patient with your peers who might be stressed about exams and also be aware that any time exams are taking place we may have to have all of the bells off throughout the school so that they are not disturbed while testing.

Wait List

For high school seniors, the question that is asked over and over is "Where are you going to college?" It can be a exciting to share the answer when it is the school you had your heart set on for your future. It can be overwhelming when you still haven't decided and are still trying to figure out which school is the best fit for you. For some students though, this question still brings anxiety and uncertainty because the top school on their list didn't fully accept or reject them - they put them on their Waiting List.  Being wait listed often feels like being in an emotional limbo.  I have had several students stop in to talk about their feelings about this life in limbo and I understand how difficult it can be as I'm not always the most patient person either.

I need to be brutally honest (even though I know you don't really want to hear this...) and say that there is not a lot that you can do to improve the chance of coming off the wait list and being accepted to the college. You need to make plans and start getting your mind set on attending one of the other schools who accepted you. If, in time, you find out that you have the opportunity to attend the school that had previously put you on their wait list, then you can re-evaluate and decide if you still want to attend. The reality is that very few students actually end up being selected off the wait list for acceptance. (Once again, this is why it is so important to tell colleges as soon as possible when you know that you will not be attending in the future so that they can make plans to potentially accept other students off their wait list.)

In the mean time, if you decide that you want to remain on a college's waiting list, be sure to follow their directions (usually filling out a form indicating your desire) and then you can also consider sending them a letter updating them about any new achievements, awards, or other information that you have accomplished since your application to their college so that might be able to take that into consideration when making their waiting list decisions.  (Some colleges may specifically say that they do or do not accept that supplemental evidence - follow their directions!)

If you are struggling with a wait-list decision, please remember that I am here to talk about it with you.

AP Test Reminder

Just a reminder to all students who will be taking AP tests next week... you need to make arrangements to arrive to school by 7:30am for morning AP tests.  You will then get checked in and ready to go for testing to start promptly at 8:00am.  Since this is different than our typical normal schedule you will want to make sure you have a plan for getting to school because the buses won't have you to school on time.  Also, since that is an hour than you are probably arriving to school this week, it wouldn't be a bad idea to start waking up a little earlier so that your body is prepared for the earlier start next week.  Good luck with your AP test review!

National College Decision Day

Seniors, by now you are hopefully well aware of the fact that Monday, May 1st is national college decision day.  The colleges have all united in the fact that they will not require you to make decisions about where you will attend prior to May 1st, but this is one of the deadlines that is firm.  As you are aware, through the college application process each college has their own timeline and often have different application deadlines, financial aid deadlines, and announce their admission decisions at different times, but May 1st is a universal deadline among all colleges requiring students to declare their decision.

Please remember that this not only means that you have informed the college of your choice that you intend to attend their college, but it also typically includes submitting a deposit.  As you reach the final days of your decision making window, if you need to talk out your choice with someone, please feel free to stop in and talk to me.

Teacher Recommendation Letters

Juniors, remember when we talked in our junior meetings about the fact that I'd remind you when it was time to start asking teachers about possibly writing a recommendation letter on your behalf?  Now is the time.  :-)

Recommendation letters are a time consuming process requiring a great deal of thought and time. Juniors, as you finalize the list of schools where you will be applying next fall, it is important to determine if you are going to need a recommendation letter from a teacher (or two). Many of the Ohio schools - Ohio State University, OU, BGSU, Kent State, etc. do not require teacher recommendations.  Because rec letters are a time consuming process, if the colleges where you are applying do not require recommendations, then do not waste your teacher's time by requesting letters that won't be needed or used!

If you are applying to schools that need teacher recommendation letters, it is very helpful and beneficial to the teachers if you can give them as much time as possible to write your recommendation letters. That means, if you know now that you are going to be applying to a school which needs a teacher rec letter, then I would like for you to ask the teachers this spring allowing them to have the entire summer to write your letter. (These next few weeks are a great time to ask!)  After you ask your teacher(s), you will want to provide them with information that can help them as they write your letter. We have several handouts in the Counseling Center and on the WKHS Counselor website that you can use for this purpose.

And yes juniors, this is also a reminder that you need to be working now toward finalizing a list of where you plan on applying to college because, as the seniors can definitely tell you - it goes by fast!

Stress

Stress comes from a range of events and life experiences. When positive things happen such as getting a new job, dating someone new, or graduating from high school, stress levels increase. And, obviously, stress levels are higher when negative things take place like failing a test, fighting with family or friends, or having a lot to do in a limited amount of time. Quite simply, the reality is that stress is a part of life and it cannot be escaped, but it is important to learn healthy strategies for dealing with stress.

I like this video about how stress affects your body and mind.

What is a stress reliever for one person may not work for someone else so you will need to think about strategies that tend to work best for you.  One suggestion is to think back to other stressful times in your life and consider what you did in those situations that helped you to deal with the stress.  Below are just a few examples of some strategies that people have found effective.

Deep breathing is frequently overlooked as a strategy, but it is one of the most powerful and can be done in every setting.  Slowing down your body and decreasing your heart rate by focusing on your breathing can help shift the chemicals in your brain because when you are feeling stressed the chemicals that cause a "fight or flight" reaction are geared up putting your body on edge.  By breathing, you are showing yourself that you don't need to be prepared to have a "fight or flight" reaction and it can shift the chemicals in your brain so that you can relax.

Talk it out!  Talking to trustworthy people around you is an effective stress management strategy.  You can talk to family members, friends, teachers, religious leaders, siblings, and obviously you  can come see me to talk.

Distract yourself with something enjoyable.  When used within reason positive distractions can help give you a break from the stress you are currently feeling.

Get the thoughts and feelings out of your head.  Journal, write, draw, or color.  Any safe source of personal expression can be helpful.

Physical activity is another beneficial strategy for managing stress.  Take a walk, work out, dance, run, lift weights, or play a sport you enjoy.

Embrace the power of music.  Performing music or listening to music can have a powerful impact on your mood and overall stress levels.

If you are an animal person, spend some time cuddling your pet or Lexi hopes you will come visit her and pet her for a while - yet another easy, positive stress reliever.

Strive to maintain perspective.  Even if you fall short of your goals and fail to achieve something you had hoped to accomplish, it does not mean that you are a failure!  Treating yourself with compassion and trying not to be too critical on yourself are important steps to help minimize your stress levels.

If you are struggling with feelings of stress, brief or long-lasting, then one other suggestion I have for you is to download the free app called the Virtual Hope Box.  It has the option for you to include pictures or videos of people important to you, there is a great deep breathing visual that you get to set for yourself, and lots of other strategies for coping.

I know that it isn't easy to deal with the stress of high school so please, remember that I am always here to listen and help in any way possible.  Also, know that you have been through bad days before and your success rate for making it through them is 100% so you will be able to make it through this too.

Mandatory Senior Questionnaire

Yesterday, all seniors received an information link for the Senior Information Questionnaire that we need for you to complete and submit prior to May 3rd.

Every year, the graduating high school seniors have the option of picking a teacher, coach, administrator, counselor, secretary, or other Worthington staff member who has played a significant role in their lives to give them their diploma.  This is one of my favorite traditions at Kilbourne!  It is a way to make the graduation ceremony much more personal and memorable.  You will select your 1st choice and 2nd choice diploma presenters on the form.

The form also allows you to request where you want us to send your final transcript.  When you head off to college or enlist in the military, they will all want a copy of your final transcript to confirm that you did officially graduate.  The information you submit on the form is what will enable us to make sure we send your transcript to the appropriate location.

We are busy working on preparing for the senior recognition and commencement ceremonies and we need additional information from you in order to put together the programs!  As you complete the senior questionnaire you will be asked to list what scholarships you received and are accepting and how much they were worth.

And finally, the form also allows for you to share some thoughts about your reflections related to high school because we value the insight and perspectives that our seniors share each year.

These forms are due back ASAP, but no later than May 3rd.

If you have updates/ changes after you have submitted your form - such as you received an additional scholarship, please email that new scholarship information to Mrs. Focht at afocht@wscloud.org.  We will try our best to include your updated scholarships in the program, but it is possible that information received after May 3rd may not be able to be included if the program has already been printed.

If you can't locate the email, please visit the Counselor website for a link to the questionnaire.

Lunch & Learn: ACT/ SAT

The WKHS Counselors will be hosting the next Lunch & Learn for parents will be held this Friday, April 21st at 12:00 (noon) over zoom.  The topic for this session will be focused on the ACT/ SAT college entrance exams.

As a reminder, the lunch and learns are brief presentations on a particular topic over zoom during lunch time so that parents/ guardians can join and listen in from home or work while eating their lunch.  The goal is that the presentation will take about 15 minutes and then that will give about 15 minutes for any other questions that families might have that we could address as a whole group.  We are excited about this opportunity to leverage technology and to meet families where they are so that you can get the most up to date information that we can share with you.

The zoom link will be emailed to all parents and we will also post it on the Counselor Website on Friday morning.

April Students of the Month

Yesterday morning was the ceremony to honor April's Students of the Month and it was our largest ceremony of the year. Students are nominated as students of the month by Kilbourne faculty and staff for their academic achievement, good citizenship, and/or contributions to the school or community. Students can only earn this recognition once in their high school career.
A special congratulations to "my" students who were among those recognized.  Momoko Abe, Lily Banner, Aron Berger, Stella Bixler, I'Lei Brown, Tyler Bussard, Eric Collier, and Marissa Dolciato.  I am proud of you!

ACT Scores

Juniors, the ACT scores for the March test you took at WKHS are back for most of our students.  (ACT technically says scores are released anywhere from 10 days to 5 weeks later so it is possible your scores might not be there just yet.)  How do you find out your scores?  You log into your MyACT account that you had created before the test date.  Information about how to do this was handed out during the PACK Period presentation in the auditorium and it was also emailed to you twice by Mrs. Dominach and Mrs. Backhurst.  If you didn't create an account at the time instructed, my hope is that using the code in the email and on the handout you received will still allow you to set up an account now and access your scores.  If that doesn't work then you will need to call ACT directly.  Their phone number is on the bottom of the ACT website.  One important note if you need to call - ACT will not talk to the parents or to the school about your score results.  They will only talk to the student so you will need to be the one to call them to figure out how to link your score to your MyACT account. We hope to receive a score report summary from ACT in the coming weeks so unfortunately, no, at this time, I can't even look up your score to tell you what you had received.

Hopefully you were happy with your test results!

Job Fair

Just a quick reminder that all students ages 16 and over are invited to attend the Job Fair this Friday!  There will be many employers looking for students who are interested in working summer jobs, part time jobs in the school year, and for soon-to-be graduates who are interested in working full time in the future.  I hope you will take advantage of this opportunity!  Check out the information and download the permission slip from the Counselor Website - www.wkhscounselors.com

Let me know if you have any questions!

Essay Workshop

For most students, writing your college essay is one of the most stressful aspects of the college application process.  In order to try to help better prepare juniors the counselors will be hosting a workshop about selecting a topic for writing your college essay.

The Essay Brainstorming Workshop Session will take place on Thursday, April 20th from 10:00am - 11:30am in Room 207.

We are really excited to be able to offer this workshop during the late-start time when younger students will be taking their End of Course exams.  This workshop is just for junior students (and not parents) as it is the student's essay and your voice is what admissions officers want to hear!  This session is optional and is ideal for those students who will be applying to a 4-year college.  (Those who will be starting at a 2 year program like Columbus State will not have to write an essay so you will not need the information covered in this session.)

So that we can plan for how many students to expect, we ask that you please RSVP using this link:
https://forms.gle/CDPwUt58SQqroZQj8

Believe me, the essays are such a critical part of the application process that this won't be the only time I talk about them on my blog, but it is also a fun and creative opportunity to introduce yourself to the admissions officers and so it is worth the time you will put into making it a great essay.  I hope you will give up a little bit of your sleeping in time and join us for the workshop!

Summer School

Did you fail a class during 1st semester?  Are you wanting to try to get ahead in one of your course requirements?  If you answered yes to either of these questions then I strongly encourage you to register NOW for summer school.

Worthington offers summer school opportunities each year with a wide range of opportunities to try to meet your academic goals.  If you failed a class and will be taking it for credit recovery, your summer school class will even be free of charge.  Summer school will be held at WKHS and transportation will be available for students who need it.  Most classes will run from June 5th - June 29th.  There are a limited number of get-ahead courses that are also offered through Worthington summer school and information about those classes and the costs associated with those courses are on the website.  I had emailed home a message with a personalized summer school registration link to students who failed a class.  If you have lost that message, feel free to reach out and I will resend it.  For all Worthington Summer School general information and to register for any get-ahead classes, please visit the district website at: https://www.worthington.k12.oh.us/Page/4034

We always get questions about taking online courses or classes in other districts and as long as it is an accredited school this is completely fine.  So, for example, if your parents are divorced and you go to spend the summer with a parent who lives in another state you can take your summer school class at the school near your other parent and then transfer the credit back to us.  Or for those students who plan on traveling a great deal over the summer, taking an online course might be more in line with your needs.  Again, in Worthington we try to be very flexible in helping all students to meet their academic goals so as long as the school you are taking classes from is an accredited school, we will transfer those credits to Worthington.

Students and parents often ask me which online schools they can use and again, if it is accredited it is fine.  The school most commonly used by students in the past has been TRECA due to the cost effectiveness of their credits.  But again, that can change from year to year and so I encourage you to search for the schools and programs that will best meet your individual needs.  I do know that TRECA summer school registration has opened so if you were planning to take a TRECA summer school class, please be sure to get signed up for that soon too.  Their website is: https://treca.org/programs/summer-school

Please, especially if you have failed a class during the 1st semester, get signed up for summer school so that you can stay on track for graduation with your class!

6 Weeks

6 weeks... we are exactly 6 weeks to Graduation for the Class of 2023.  And tomorrow is 6 weeks to exams for all of the rest of the students.  Doesn't that seem incredibly soon?

Seniors, don't let up on making sure you pass your classes and fulfill your graduation requirements.

Everyone else, please make sure you are maximizing every point in class to help give your grades the cushion they need ahead of final exams.  This is also a good reminder that you want to stay organized and start preparing your materials to make it easier when we get to the point when you need to study for exams.

I am excited to see you all and hear about your spring breaks!  I hope you had an enjoyable time.  If you're like me, you might struggle with the morning wake up call tomorrow after a week of sleeping in so try to get to bed a little earlier tonight.  6 weeks (and 3 days) until summer - we can do this!

Creating Your Resume

Yes, I know you are in high school.  And yes, I am still telling you that it is time to start working on your resume.

Obviously, any students hoping to get a job this summer need a resume now.  And if you are planning to attend the Job Fair at the Worthington Education Center during the field trip next Friday, April 14th, then making sure you have a resume ready to share with potential employers at the Job Fair is critical.

But even if you're not qutie ready to find a job yet, working to start the process of compiling your resume is helpful and important.  Why?  Because you can't remember everything unless it is written down somewhere.  So if you wait until your senior year to try to recall what the volunteer experience you had as a freshman was or the name of the award you received in your sophomore year, it will be tough.  Not impossible, but definitely not as easy as if you continually update your resume throughout your high school years.

What types of things can you include on your resume?  I'm so glad you asked.  :-)  Obviously your name and contact information.  Be sure that you have an email address that is appropriate for employers to send you messages (and that you also check this email account regularly).  Do NOT use your school email for this purpose since outside contacts won't be able to email you on it.  You want to include information about your academic progress, any work experiences you have, volunteer experiences, clubs/ activities/ sport involvement, leadership experiences, and awards/ recognition you have received.  You will not want to go back to middle or elementary school when identifying your list - just stick to your high school years.  Your resume should also highlight any special talents/ abilities/ skills that you have.  For example, if you are fluent in another language, be sure to mention that in your resume.

Please understand that your resume doesn't have to be long or fancy.  All employers will know that you are a high school student and so your experiences and skills will be more limited than it will be by the time you are my age.  But if you have a little extra time during spring break, this is a great item to try to knock off your "to do list" so that you are ready for next week's job fair and for any future job searches.

Culture Week

During spring break, I know that many of my students are traveling either with your family or with your sporting teams, but no matter where you are visiting, I know there is no way you saw as many countries and cultural experiences as shared by our students last week.  Culture Week at WKHS was the idea and vision of some of our students who are connected to the English Learner programs at Kilbourne.  The students worked really hard to share information about their native countries and the cultures they and their families are connected to beyond the US.

I was so proud of my students who created posters, made food items, and engaged students in games in the library this week all as a way to help edcuate the rest of us about the backgrounds that combine together to help make WKHS an even more special place.
