You Made It!

Wow, it doesn't seem possible that we have reached the end of another successful school year. I am sure you are all breathing a sigh of relief that exams are over and summer has officially started.  Congratulations on making it through the year!  I hope you have a wonderful, safe and relaxing summer... without feeling bored.  :-)

Also, I will still be posting on my blog on occassion throughout the summer, but it will be FAR less than in the school year.

Diploma Presenter

I am still thinking about Sunday's graduation ceremony.  I loved being gathered with you all and the nervous anticipation as you waited in the holding room ahead of the ceremony.  I loved hearing one of my students, Emma Browning, sing the National Anthem and watching as another one of my students, Owen Chilcoat, gave his speech and was then among those inducted into the Hall of Fame.  I loved seeing all of the families and groups of students gathered together before and after the ceremony ended hugging, laughing, and celebrating.  But, most of all, my favorite part of graduation was the smile and hug I got to give to students just seconds before I handed them their diploma.

Kilbourne has lots of cool traditions and allowing seniors to have the option of who they want to have hand them their diploma is, undoubtedly, my favorite one of all.  I love the fact that students will be able to look back years from now and say x is who gave me my diploma because in so many districts that isn't the case.  To me, it is the ultimate recognition of how important the student/ staff relationship is to our school and district.

Each year that I have been asked to hand someone their diploma I am deeply touched and honored.  This means so much to me because my students mean so much to me.

Pictured above from left to right: Emma Browning, Natalie Cox, Stefany Flores Campos, Jerald Addison, Rachel Auborn, Brenna Burrell and Kahlida Abdul Qadir.  (I also was able to present diplomas to Noah Adams and Broderik Curry.)

Each of these individuals are talented in all different aspects and my life is better because of knowing them.  When I think about the experiences some of these students have had to endure to be able to walk across the stage - wow, it truly takes my breath away.  And so to Emma, Natalie, Stefany, Jerald, Rachel, Brenna, Kahlida, Noah and Broderik - I want to to say thank you for allowing me to have the honor of presenting you with your diploma.  Thank you for the positive impact you have had on my life and on WKHS as a whole.  I am so fortunate that I had the chance to get to know you and I cannot wait to see all that you accomplish in the future!  Congratulations and Good Luck!  Love, Miss Abbott

Summer School Reminder

Just as a reminder, if you fail a class in high school, you have to repeat that course before you can move on to the next level.  So, for example, if you fail Math 1 then you have to take Math 1 again before you move on to Math 2.  This is particularly challenging for students who fail English or Math since those courses each require 4 credits to graduate.  If this applies to you, PLEASE be sure to sign up for Worthington Summer School ASAP!  It will be held at WKHS, it is free and transportation is available if you need it.  The way summer school registration is working this year for credit recovery, they are requiring students to use a personalized email link for signing up for Worthington Summer School.  I have sent links (at least twice) to all students who failed a first semester class.  For 2nd semester, as I begin getting confirmation that students have failed a class this semester I will send them out for this semester as well.

Additionally, back in February when we were looking at your intended courses for next year many of you reported that you would be taking classes during the summer to get-ahead in your classes/ credits.  That is completely acceptable - you just need to make sure you are taking your classes through an accredited school and then transferring that credit back to us by bringing in a copy of your transcript.  Many students have found TRECA to be a cost effective alternative, but again, it can be any accredited school.

If something has changed in your plans and you will not be taking a class that you had previously indicated you were going to complete via summer school, please stop to see me or send me an email at school to let me know that so that I can adjust your schedule for next year.  (This goes with advanced classes and for classes that you have failed.)  I want to try to get as many of these adjustments made as possible before the school year ends so that your courses will be right in August when you pick up your schedule.

What a Weekend!

Congratulations to the Class of 2023!  You are all now officially alumni of Worthington Kilbourne High School and I am proud of you and loved celebrating with you all this weekend.

It all started with Baccalaureate on Friday night where we had the chance to pause and reflect on your talents and accomplishments, hear reminders of approaching the world with curiosity, and, best of all, seeing your baby pictures and how far you have come to today.  I love Baccalaureate and many of my students were involved in the planning or had roles during the day or artwork featured.  A huge shout-out to the Activity Club and "my" students involved including: Ben Ambler, Kya Angle, Emma Browning, Brooke Carter, Meara Couvillon, Linclon Glaros, Owen Chilcoat, Jude Abuzeide, Caleb Anderson, Toby Bomser, Lily Aschenbrand, Alyssa Berger, Sopha DePizzo, and Mirabel Domecq - you all planned and put on a beautiful evening.

And then to today's graduation ceremony!  It was the big celebration of your class and recognition of how much you have learned and grown since you first started school in Kindergarten and especially over the last four years of high school.  A special congratulations to Owen Chilcoat who was inducted into the Kilbourne Hall of Fame - such a deserving honor!

It was truly a great weekend!  But now it is back to the real world... and for all of the other grades, tomorrow starts exams.  So, good luck, I hope you had a weekend full of studying.  And I hope that I will get to see you all before summer break... which means I would love to have you pop by and say hi/ bye before the end of the year.  (Lexi would love that too!)

Honors, AP and IB Summer Work

For current 9th- 11th graders, as you start thinking ahead to next year it is important to remember that many students are planning to take Honors, AP and IB classes.  If that applies to you, I wanted to remind you that many of those classes will require you to complete summer assignments.  Honors/ AP/ IB teachers have been working hard to prepare meaningful learning opportunities to help you get a jump start during the summer months.  Please pay close attention to your school email (since we don't have announcements running due to testing) because your teachers will either be emailing you the summer work or letting you know about the meetings they will be hosting before/ after school.  These meetings allow for students to meet with the teachers for next year, they will provide any Google/ Schoology classrooms for you to join, give you the chance to learn about the summer requirements and expectations, and to understand what you will need to do if you have questions or need support. We are also in the process of posting copies of the summer assignments that teachers have shared with us on the Counselor Website so that you can have easy access to them there as well.

It is also important that all students are aware that there is a drop deadline of July 15th for all AP and IB courses.  Prior to July 15th students can drop the classes without penalty.  After July 15th the summer assignments are still required and the grades for the summer work will be transferred into the new class that you will transferring into for next year instead of your intended class.  So, it is important not only that you know what you will need to do, but also to start working on the assignments - at least enough to make sure you feel confident that you are going to enjoy the course - so that you will know by July 15th if you feel you are going to need to change out of that class.

Dear Seniors...

A note to my seniors...

Wow, Class of 2023, what a journey your high school career has been.  From a global pandemic to life returning to normal and a lot of roller-coaster adjustments in between, you have made it.  Today was your final day of high school - CONGRATULATIONS!

Over these four years, you have demonstrated resilience.  You have displayed an unwavering enthusiasm.  You have cared about those around you and shown up for friends in need.  You have refused to be shaken off-course by challenges and have met them head on and grown as a result.  It didn't matter if it was challenging classes, difficulties with friends/ family, or frustrations in your extra-curricular activities, you found a way to push through with strength and courage.  You have achieved success and are prepared for your futures in college, the military or the work-force.

I am proud of you.  I hope that as you get ready to leave Kilbourne behind you will know that you were cared about and that you have made an impact on all of the staff members lives - including mine!  Thank you for your willingness to share your life for these last 4 years with me.  I wish you nothing but the best in all that is ahead of you.  And remember, "Once a Wolf, Always a Wolf" so if you ever need anything, know I am just an email or phone call away.

Love, Miss Abbott

BUT ALSO... you're not quite done yet.  :-)  Ok, so you are done with classes and that is huge.  But I also want to remind you that this Friday at 10am is your graduation rehearsal.  This is a MANDATORY requirement if you are going to participate in Sunday's commencement ceremony.  Graduation rehearsal is held at WKHS.  You do not have to dress up or wear your cap and gown - those are saved just for Sunday.  So even though I am saying good-bye to you as students today, I will see you on Friday (and, of course, on Sunday)!

Exam Schedule

Today and tomorrow are exams for seniors, but we are following a normal bell schedule.  Next week, however, we will be on a very different schedule for exams for the rest of the student body.

Below is the schedule for the final exams:

Day One - Monday, May 22nd:
8:40 - 10:35: 1st period exam
10:45 - 12:40: 4th period exam
12:40 - 1:20: Lunch
1:25 - 3:20: 7th period exam

Day Two - Tuesday, May 23rd:
8:40 - 10:35: 2nd period exam
10:45 - 12:40: 5th period exam
12:40 - 1:20: Lunch
1:25 - 3:20: 8th period exam

Day Three - Wednesday, May 24th:
8:40 - 10:35: 3rd period exam
10:45 - 12:40: 6th period exam
12:40 - 120: NO Lunch Provided!
1:25 - 3:20: Make-Up Exams

A couple of questions that tend to come up each year at exam time...

Yes, you are REQUIRED and EXPECTED to be in all of your classes during an exam. (Even if you don't have an actual exam, the teachers are going to be working with you on projects, papers, or other learning related to their course.)

No, you do NOT need to be in school during your scheduled lunch period or during your Options or Prep periods. (Which means, for example, that if you have 3rd period prep and 6th period lunch that you do not have to come to school at all on the 24th.)

Good luck studying and preparing for your exams.  (Hint, please start that process NOW if you haven't already.)  There is information related to study strategies on the Counselor Website in case you need it.

Next Year's Schedule

Mr. Almansonn (in partnership with the rest of the WKHS administrators) has been working on the master schedule for next year.  They have determined where each class will be held during the school day to meet the most student requests possible. This includes running your requests through the computer to try to match as many of the requests as possible between what you had asked for and what is possible in the computers.  As of this weekend, they have officially "locked" the master schedule into place.

Unfortunately, now that the schedule is locked it becomes crazy for the counselors as we go through each of the schedules that didn't match and try to figure out if there is a solution and what possible options we can use to make a schedule fit together. We will spend hours pouring over schedules and will have to call down some of you to talk about back up choices based upon the conflicts in your schedule. This is never easy and I know it is disappointing when you don't get all of the classes that you wanted, so I promise that I am doing the best I can to make everything work together.

I started the process of calling kids down today.  If in the coming days, you get an email or a remind message from me to come see me during your lunch, off period or between periods, I am asking you to please make every effort to come at the day and time I am calling for you so that we can look at your schedule together.  (And that specific timing is when I think I should be able to fit you in without making you wait for long.)  You don't want me to be the one to make those tough choices for you so we really do need to meet and look at the options together.

Inevitably, when everyone hears that the schedule is locked, students will be curious about the schedule and what their classes will look like for next year.  I am more than happy to talk about this with you, but not until all of the conflicts are resolved.  So, I ask you to please be patient with me and wait until the last three days of school (next week around your exams) to try to come and get a sneak peek at what your schedule will hopefully be for next year.  (Full disclosure though, all schedules are 100% up for revision and changes based on whatever has to happen with the master schedule as the summer progresses.)

Exciting Times

What a whirlwind these last few days have been...

On Thursday night we were able to honor nearly 200 seniors as a part of the Senior Recognition Ceremony.  During this special evening, seniors were celebrated for the achievements they have had over the last four years of high school as well as for the scholarships they have earned to help them in the future.  It is always so fun to be able to stand up there as my students walk across the stage and think about how far you have come in such a short time.  I am proud of all of you and this is the first big celebration, but the next one is the "real one" with graduation being just 1 week from today!

Then Friday had 2 big moments that I was able to share in...

First up was Arts in Action Day.  I love this tradition at WKHS where we celebrate all of the amazingly talented students at Kilbourne.  I love walking around to see the art you have created over the course of the year.  And then, the Activity Club helped to sponsor a Healing Drumming Circle led by Iggy Garcia.  I know that a lot of students had the chance to rotate outside to participate in the drumming during your lunch and what I loved most about our time drumming was watching the smiles on people's faces as you were participating.  There is such an element of power of connection when we are all drumming our own rhythm and somehow it still works together in a positive and meaningful way.

And then Friday was also a big day for two of our students, Tommy Bussard and Nicolas Richards.  They have been participating in an internship experience this semester with Worthington Industries and both of them were hired on full time to be able to continue working at Worthington Industries while also going to college.  Worthington Industries has such a great track-record of helping to promote employees and enabling them to move up within their organization that it is an exciting chance for both Tommy and Nicolas to be able to be employed by them already.  There were lots of speakers at their signing ceremony celebrating the positive impact they have already had through their learning experiences this semester.  Tommy, I am so proud of you and impressed by your hard work and dedication.  You deserve the recognition that you received from Worthington Industries and I cannot wait to see all that is ahead of you!  Congratulations!

I keep thinking of how lucky I am to be able to share in all of these types of experiences because there were truly memories made over these last days that will remain for years to come!

Sending AP Scores

Seniors, last week I talked about the fact that if you have taken CC+ classes that you need to be sure that you send your CSCC or COTC transcripts directly to your intended college, but I realized that I neglected to mention that if you have taken an AP exam, you will also need to send those official scores to your intended college.

As you are likely aware, colleges each get to set their own protocol for what AP tests they will accept and what scores will result in earning credits at their school.  You can check out the AP Credit Policy using the search on CollegeBoard's website here: https://apstudents.collegeboard.org/getting-credit-placement/search-policies

One great aspect about sending the AP Scores is that they will send your current and past scores to the college with one report so if you have taken 5 AP tests, you don't have to pay to send 5 different scores.  And, if you have taken an AP test this year, you can still request your scores to be sent to 1 school for free if you log into your account and select your intended college before June 20th.

Here is the page that explains everything you need to know about sending your AP Scores: https://apstudents.collegeboard.org/sending-scores

Thank you Teachers

This week is Teacher Appreciation Week.  It is a time for us to celebrate the impact that great educators have in all of our lives.  At WKHS we are blessed with so many incredible educators.  There is no shortage of teachers who go above and beyond to help students.  You have teachers who are willing to give up their free time to help make sure you understand the material being covered in class.  And, for seniors, your Kilbourne teachers wrote countless numbers of recommendation letters for students this (and every) year.  Giving up their free time, making themselves available to respond when needed, and helping you to achieve your future life goals might not be necessary aspects of being a good teacher, but it is that heart and dedication to students that is within every good teacher and is what sets so many of our teachers apart.

When was the last time you thanked your teachers?  I know that they get paid to do their jobs, but just like you love to have positive encouragement, remember that your teachers are human and they also love to know that others notice their extra help and effort.  If you were a student who needed a teacher recommendation letter and you haven't written them a note of appreciation, perhaps this week is a great week to do so.  Or simply make an extra effort this week to "catch a teacher" going above and beyond for you or for a classmate and thank him/ her for what you saw them do.  We have so many incredible teachers that I believe you will be successful in finding something to thank one of them for this week.

Summer Plans

Summer is a great time to relax and unwind from the hectic schedule of homework, studying and the general day to day expectations of school. But your summer shouldn’t just be wasted away into day after day of doing “nothing.” The summer is a perfect time to explore your passions, investigate your interests and indulge in fun activities that you might not have time for during the regular school year. As we are in these few weeks of school, I wanted to encourage you to start thinking about what you will do this summer to make sure that you have a productive summer and don’t spend the entire break being bored.

So, what are some ideas of how you can spend your summer? Consider taking a class (or two) in summer school. This is especially important if you are behind in credits and not doing well in school. Success rates of summer school completion are very high – in part because you are able to focus on just one subject at a time and you generally have smaller class sizes so the teacher can focus more one-on-one time with each student. If you are planning on taking a class in summer school it is important to sign up as soon as possible to make sure that you will not be closed out of the class of your choice.

Perhaps you are looking for ideas that do not involve more school… Summer vacation is a great time to expand your resume and pursue your passions by volunteering or working a summer job.  I
f you're still looking for summer job opportunities we have a page on the Counselor website highlighting some organizations who have reached out because they are seeking employees.  And, with regards to volunteering, many students don’t know where to volunteer and the truth is the sky is the limit – anything that interests you has the potential for being a volunteer service project. Get creative in your approach! For ideas about existing needs for volunteers you can visit HandsOn Central Ohio.

Also, each year the Down Syndrome Association of Central Ohio sponsors a week long camp called iCanBike that provides differently abled campers a safe, supportive and fun opportunity to learn to ride a two wheeled bicycle.  The camp will be held at Worthington Kilbourne High School from June 19th through June 23rd.  Volunteers must be at least 15 years old and physically able to walk and run alongside the participant as they master the skill of riding a bike.  Volunteers will be partnered with a single camper and you will work together for the week for 75 minutes each day.  There are sessions spread throughout the day to match everyone's schedule availability.  Students who have volunteered for this camp in the past have shared how fun and rewarding this experience had been for them as well as for the campers who were learning to ride their bikes.  Anyone interested in learning more or registering to be a volunteer should go to http://dsaco.net/icanbike/

If you are starting to consider different careers, perhaps you have a family member or friends that would allow you to shadow them for a day or two on the job to see what their particular career is really like as this will help you determine if that career is truly of interest to you.

Current juniors (Soon to be Seniors) – this summer is going to be busy as you prepare for your senior year. Hopefully you are taking the time to visit colleges from your list and getting an idea of what you think about different schools. (Don’t forget to take a picture of you somewhere on campus for me!) You can also begin drafting your college application essays and preparing for the ACT and SAT exams.

Of course, there is always spending quality time reconnecting with your family and friends, going on vacation, reading, and even attending camps or other formal activities which can be a part of the summer for many.  If you are interested in learning about some of the camp opportunities - many of which are offered on college campuses, please be sure to check out the camp opportunities page on the WKHS Counselor website as we continue adding summer enrichment experiences to the site as we receive them.

The bottom line is try to be productive this summer – at the very least it will give you great stories to share next fall when people ask you what you did over the summer.

Socratic Society

On Friday morning we honored and celebrated students who were being inducted into the Socratic Society.  Staff members are given the opportunity to recognize students for excellence in one or more of the core Socratic values of Scholarship, Integrity, Personal Effort, Compassion, or Lifelong Learning. Students are only eligible to be selected for this honor one time during their high school career.

13 of the students who were inducted were "my" students.  A huge congratulations to: Saja Abuasi, Libby Alderman, Jimmy Alvarado Dominguez, Aubrey Bally, Ian Barrie, John Battle, Claire Bentley, Ethan Bevington, Molly Brandt, Kate Campbell, Benjamin Cano Illescas, Mallory Carlin, and Celia DeMary.  I am proud of you!

Prom

Tonight is prom night for WKHS juniors and seniors. This is an exciting and memorable night for students and I hope you have a great evening. Let's be honest, I also hope that it is a safe evening! You want prom to be memorable because it was a positive night...

I know that today will be busy as you get ready, take pictures, go out to eat and hopefully you are looking forward to a great night both at prom and After-Hours. It should be fun!

One last reminder about safety - please remember that just because it is prom night that does NOT give you the excuse to make choices that you know are not wise.  Take the time to talk with your parents before you leave tonight about what you will do if you end up in an unexpected situation and need help. Have a good time - and please, be smart and stay safe!

CC+ Transcripts

Seniors, you have requested for your WKHS transcript to be sent to your intended college by filling out the graduation questionnaire.  We will use the information you submitted to send your final transcript after graduation to your intended college.  But, it is also important to remember that if you are a senior who took College Credit Plus (CC+) classes through CSCC or COTC last year or this year, you need to be sure that you request for your CSCC and/ or COTC transcripts to be sent directly from CSCC and/or COTC to your future college.

If you are going to continue at Columbus State, then you don't have to do anything with your CSCC transcript (they already have that), but you would need to send them your COTC transcript.

If you are going to a 4 year college, then you will need to send them both transcripts... and yes, this is in addition to us at WKHS sending them your final high school transcript.

We have posted the links for how to send your CC+ transcripts on the Counselor website so if this is something that applies to you, please be sure to request them to be sent.  As always, let me know if you have any questions.

Get Going

For a lot of students, the process of actually initiating the work - just getting started - can be the hardest part.  Have you experienced that?  Maybe you think about an assignment over and over again, but just can't get going on it.  Or maybe you think that you'll wait and do it later and then later becomes never.  I recently read a message from Brian Kight (who writes a lot about self-discipline) that said when you're thinking about something you want or need to do there are really just 4 choices:

1. Start now

2. Start later

3. Try to find another way

4. Never do it at all

The task never changes or suddenly gets easier - it is still just sitting there waiting for you, but the amount of time you have to invest in completing the activity can get less.  So if you are struggling to get going to finish up on your school work I will remind you that seniors have just 2 weeks left (10 school days) and everyone else have 12 days of classes plus your 3 exam days.  That means that you would benefit from starting now.  You will feel more in control over your choice and the situation.  If you are someone who struggles with initiating a task perhaps some of these strategies will help you:

  • Start with the easiest task first (can help you build momentum)
  • Start with the hardest task first (get the dreaded part out of the way)
  • Set a timer for 10 minutes and just work as hard as you can for 10 minutes without stopping.  If you're still struggling after 10 minutes then you can switch to something else.  This often helps because if you're ok with doing the work - getting over the hurdle of getting started can help
  • Write it all down - spell out everything you need to do and try to break it into the smallest steps possible.  That way you can start knocking items off the to-do list.
  • Get some help.  Parents, teachers, the Academic Assistants, and sometimes even your friends can help you stay focused on getting work started.
I know that stress levels are high as you try to wrap up the 4th quarter, prepare for exams, and are just ready for it to be summer break so take it a step at a time and get going - you CAN do this!

Parent Lunch & Learn

This Friday the WKHS Counselors will host our last Lunch & Learn session of the year.  The focus of this week's meeting will be on the Career Exploration process.  We know that helping your kids figure out what they want to do some day is incredibly important and so we hope this Lunch & Learn will be helpful.

As with all of the previous Lunch & Learn sessions, the meeting will take place over zoom at noon on Friday and will last just 30 minutes so that you can grab your lunch, learn something new, and get back to your day without taking too much time.  The zoom link will be emailed to all parents on Friday morning and will also be available on the Counselor website.

I hope to see you online Friday!

College Decision Day!

It's National College Decision Day!  May 1st is the universally accepted date for all colleges across the country to require students to confirm their decision (and submit their deposit) indicating their plan to attend that particular college.

Congratulations to all of the seniors who have now finalized their plans for next year and which college they will be attending in the future.  I know that for those who had been wrestling with their decision and trying to weigh the pros and cons of different schools, today is such a wonderful day because the decision has been made and you can finally just be excited without the weight and stress of deciding.  I am excited for you and the bright futures you have in front of you!

Don't forget, now that you have made your decision, your mandatory graduation questionnaire is due back by Wednesday.
