Net Price Calculator

Today I was out of the building for a meeting about Financial Aid.  My head is still swimming with information that they shared, but I want to remind students of every grade about the benefits of using the Net Price Calculator.

Every college features a net price calculator on their website. This requirement is in an effort to help provide students and parents with the information needed to make more informed decisions and choices about what they can expect to pay for a college education at each school. Now, I will forewarn you that not every net price calculator is the same and some are more detailed than others. Why does this matter? Well, if it is very specific and takes all of the different factors into consideration that the financial aid office will be looking at when creating your financial aid package, then you are likely to get a better picture of what your estimated aid might be, but if it is a more simplistic calculator then there could be more variance when compared to your actual aid package.  Plus, of course, the accuracy of the information that you submit will determine the accuracy of the information that you receive back.

Without a doubt, college is very expensive and so trying to figure out the best ways to be able to finance your education is an important factor to consider in your college search and selection process. I hope that this tool will be useful to you as you investigate schools.

AP Exam Registration Reminder

CollegeBoard is in charge of AP Tests and they have fall deadlines related to the tests so you need to be sure you understand all of this so that you don't miss out on a key step related to the class and testing.

By now, all students should have “joined” the AP course online at the beginning of the year to access resources from the CollegeBoard throughout the year.  You will need your CollegeBoard account information to login and join the AP classes you are taking.  (If you have taken the PSAT, SAT, or AP Exams in the past then you already have a CollegeBoard Account.)

If you have a CollegeBoard account, it is important to use that account (and not to create a new one) as your scores from previous CollegeBoard assessments (PSAT, SAT, AP exams) are linked to your account.  If you already have established a CollegeBoard account, please visit myap.collegeboard.org and make certain that you can log in. If you have forgotten your password, you may call 1-888-225-5427 or email apstudents@info.collegeboard.org for assistance.

If you have not already established a CollegeBoard student account, please sign up by going to myap.collegeboard.org. Make sure you write down and save your log-in information for future reference.  Remember, when you are setting up your CollegeBoard account, you do NOT want to use your school email account as your wscloud account cannot accept emails from outside of the district.

If you have questions, about establishing your account or linking it to the AP resources, please contact College Board at 1-888-225-5427 or email apstudents@info.collegeboard.org.

Once again this year students will register for the AP Tests in the fall rather than in the spring.  Below is information about the costs for registering for the AP exams and the deadlines for registering.

Exam Fees:
Regular exam fee - $100 if ordered by November 4
Students who are on the Free/ Reduced lunch program with the district are able to test for free, but you still must go through the full registration process.  Your My Payments Plus account should automatically show you are registering for a fee of $0.
·         Late exam fee $140 ($100 exam fee + $40 late fee)
o   Exams ordered between November 5 and February 24

November 4 – Regular Deadline
·         Last day to order exams at regular exam fee ($100)
·         Register for AP exams through My Payments Plus account
·         After November 4, all changes to exam status must go through Worthington Gifted Services Office

February 24 – Final Deadline
·         Last day to order exams with $40 late fee ($100 exam fee + $40 late fee = $140)
·         Last day to make changes to exam status

Questions? Contact Kyle Sarver or Suzanne Palmer in the Gifted Services Office, 614-450-6056/ ksarver@wscloud.org or 614-450-6055/ spalmer@wscloud.org.

WKHS Activities

At Kilbourne we are lucky to have LOTS of clubs and activities that students can join in on and participating in one (or more) is a great way to be able to find the place where you belong at school.  Not only are clubs and activities a great way to meet people with similar interests, but they also give you the chance to be able to contribute in a positive way to the activities and groups which show the diverse interests and strengths of our school.

Lately on the announcements I have heard information shared about several new clubs...  The WKHS Ski & Board club is returning with Mr. Patch leading the way.  If you enjoy skiing or snow-boarding, this might be a great chance to join a club and do something that you already love.  There was also an announcement about a new Baking Club that Mrs. Saunders is starting and I think that will be a fun experience for any of you who enjoy baking (and eating) your creations.  Mrs. Saunders is a very talented cake decorator with elaborate cake creations so I'm sure you will have fun learning from her as a part of this club.

But what if you look at the list of clubs and there isn't one that jumps out at you?  Then this is your perfect invitation to show your leadership and start a new club!  Organizing a club is much easier than you'd think... you simply need to find a few people with shared interests, a staff member who is willing to volunteer as your mentor, fill out a form, announce the club's existence and start meeting!  You can totally do that for an area of interest/ passion for you.  For example, I was over at TWHS for a meeting a few weeks ago and I saw signs about their new Spike Ball club.  I know there are plenty of WKHS students who enjoy spike ball.  That can become a club.  Anime is another area of interest for many of our WKHS students, so why not start a club dedicated to anime?  There is no shortage of ideas or opportunities because Kilbourne wants to make sure that every student has a place where you feel supported, connected, and involved and clubs are a great chance to make this happen!

If you want more information about the clubs that exist or to get the form to establish a new club, don't hesitate to stop by the co-curricular (athletic) office at WKHS and they can help you!

Interviews

A few weeks ago I was able to participate in mock interviews for the students in the Career Mentorship class.  It was a fun to interview the students and learn more about them.  But my biggest take away was that you don't realize how much of an impression an interview can make... and you need to sell yourself!

What do I mean by selling yourself?  You need to think about the strengths that you bring to a job or college and find ways to talk about them.  You need to share examples of stories which show your characteristics in action and talk about those moments.  You need to point out the positives you can contribute.  Sharing and talking about these things doesn't mean you're bragging or that you are cocky.  The interviewers typically don't know you and they don't know anything about you.  If you don't tell them, they won't ever know!

How did I realize this?  During the mock interviews, I had a chance to interview a few of "my" students.  And I could have told an interviewer more positive things about them than they told me about themselves.  You speak 2 languages - that is AMAZING!  Tell them that.  You have moved and adjusted to a new school - that is RESILIENT!  Tell them that.  You are already working a part-time job somehwere - that is DEPENDABILITY!  Tell them that.  You play a sport and keep up with school - that is STRONG TIME MANAGEMENT!  Tell them that.  You don't do much but hang out at home, watch tv, and play video games - that is CONTENTMENT!  Tell them that.

Yes, so some of your strengths and characteristics and values might be in how you sell them to the person you're talking to, but each of you has gifts that you bring to the table.  You can all make a positive difference in a job or on a college campus in the future.  It is up to you, in the interview, to help make sure that this positive difference is seen and noticed by the person you are talking to so please, SELL YOURSELF!

Good Luck

Tomorrow, while everyone is enjoying the start of the long weekend, Owen Cotterman, a current senior, (and one of my students) will be competing in the Golf State Championship!  It takes tremendous dedication, focus and hard work to qualify for states in any sport.  I am proud of Owen for his commitment and I know he will represent Kilbourne well at states.  Please join me in wishing Owen good luck!

I hope you all have a great and safe long weekend!

Semester Grades

Tomorrow is the final day of the 1st quarter.  (Yay!)  And I know that there are a lot of students who are stressed out about their grades, but I want to remind you how grades, credits and GPA work.

Students earn credits each semester if their SEMESTER grade is passing.  And the SEMESTER grades are the only grades which appear on the transcript and count into a student's cumulative GPA.

What makes up your semester grade?  Each semester grade is calculated using the 2 quarter grades and the semester exam grade.  For WKHS students, the return of semester exams and how that will impact your grade is a new element for almost all of you.  Each quarter grade is worth 45% of your semester grade and your exam is worth 10% of your semester grade.

So, if you look at your 1st quarter grades, that equals 45% of your grade for the semester, but you still have 55% of your grade left to earn.  Which means hope is never lost even if your grade isn't where you want it to be.  However, if your grades aren't where they should or could be, you need to start making changes right away because it becomes more difficult to dig out of the hole with every passing day that you don't do well.

When we had exams previously a lot of students would be concerned that the exam could change their grade up or down a letter grade.  And while yes, that is technically true, what we found was that most students performed about the same on their exam grade as they did in the classes.  So you don't want to count on getting a 100% on your semester exam if you were getting F's all quarter long.

You're at the half-way point for earning the grades that will be on your transcript and calculate into your GPA.  Be sure that you are setting yourself up for success.  Every day is a day to bring you one step closer to your goals.  Try not to focus too much on the ending point and just do what needs to be done today to get you closer to where you want to be in the end.

Showing you care

First, before I get into today's blog post, I want to remind all students that if you are planning to participate in the field trip to the Delaware Area Career Center in November, remember to turn in your permission slip to the Counseling Center before the end of the day on Thursday!  There is a tray in the front of the counseling center where you can leave your completed permission slip.

Now... the real reason behind my post today is to talk about the concept of what do you DO when you care...

I was recently listening to a speaker talking about how a lot of teens might hear their friends talk about difficult topics.  This might be thoughts of self-harm or suicide, it could be depression or deep sadness, or thoughts of hurting someone else.  When these conversations come up, how do you show you care?  A lot of times teens will fall into a trap thinking that if they keep it a secret because their friend trusted them that it would be the best way to demonstrate that care.  But that isn't truth.  To show you care it means you have to demonstrate that by speaking up and sharing the concerns with a trusted adult.

I have heard kids claim that they think it is "snitching" on their friends if they are telling about a concerning statement or behavior, but nothing could be further from the truth.  You are not snitching on them when you are trying to get them help.  Snitching is if you're trying to get someone in trouble - not helping them get support when they aren't able or willing to get that help on their own.

When your intention is to get someone help, care and support, that is ALWAYS a good thing!  Additionally, if you were to hear someone make some kind of a threat about the school, community or against someone else, speaking up is demonstrating your care for the school, community or other person.  Again, this is always a positive action!

My hope is that you will always speak up and say something if you think someone might be struggling.  Getting help is important and you could be the one to help link them to that needed care!

Why THIS college?

Why do you like a particular college?  What is it about the school that made it stand out to you and left you with the impression that this would be a good place for you to spend your collegiate years?

Hopefully, you have an idea about what you'd answer for both of those questions for each school that you are including on your list of schools where you are going to apply.  And, let me clear - you should like something about every college that you are considering and you should feel good about each of the schools if you are applying there!

In addition to mattering for deciding where you are going to apply, your answers to these questions are essential when you are trying to answer college-specific essay questions.  Some colleges will ask applicants to answer supplemental essay questions and often one of these questions relates to what you like about their school.  They may phrase it in different ways, but the bottom line is that they are trying to determine why you believe their school is a good fit for you.

Remember, the admissions officers who work for the school already think their school is great and they know about the wonderful opportunities available so you need to take it beyond saying that they have a great location, outstanding professors, and wonderful weather.  You need to take it to the next level by identifying specific aspects at the school where you can see yourself contributing to the school and offerings that you plan to take advantage of while you are in college.

Good luck in searching for the right college fit for you and for conveying why it's a good fit in your essays.

The Week Ahead

First and foremost I want to let you know that I will be out of the building on Tuesday and Wednesday this week... so if you have questions, please try to stop by and see me tomorrow or Thursday. It is the last week of the quarter so please focus on finishing out this quarter strong!

Additionally, seniors, Are you applying to a 4 year college?  If so, please remember that your deadlines are fast approaching (November 1st which is a common early application deadline is just 2 weeks away).  There are a lot of steps you need to take care of related to your college applications and you need to be sure to complete them in a timely manner.

1.       You need to request your transcript to be sent to each of the colleges you are applying to. Please do this ASAP by completing the Transcript Request Form.

2.       If you are applying through Common App, you need to invite me as your Counselor so that I can complete the school report form and submit your requested transcript from step 1 above.

3.       If you are applying to a school that requires a teacher letter of recommendation, complete the Teacher Rec Form ASAP and give it to your teacher when you ask them to write a letter for you. Only do this if your school requires a letter of recommendation.  And remember, you should be giving them 30 days to write a letter for you – which means if you haven’t already asked for a rec letter, you might not be able to hit the early application deadline.  You will need to invite and assign the teacher who is writing your recommendation letter on Common App.

4.       Only if you NEED a letter of recommendation from your counselor, please complete the Counselor Recommendation Form and then have your parents complete the Parent Brag sheet as soon as possible and return them to me.  If your colleges do not require a separate recommendation letter, do not complete this step. (This is different from the School Report Form. I will complete the school report form for all applications.)

5.      Work with your parents to complete the FAFSA by your college’s Financial Aid Priority deadline.

Please see me with any questions regarding the application process or your applications. I am happy to help.  Good luck as you continue working on your applications!

College Visits

Walking on college campuses, exploring the buildings, eating the food, meeting the people are all a part of the process in deciding which colleges you'd like to apply to and ultimately to attend.  We have a long weekend coming up next weekend and so Friday, October 21, could be a great day to make a college visit.

So what do you do if you want to make a visit?  Start off by signing up for a visit.  (Students should make the call - not the parents.)  Some colleges will have an online option to sign up for a tour and information session, but for other colleges you will have to call the admissions office to reserve your spot.

When you go on your visit you don't have to be dressed up, but be sure that you are dressed appropriate.  If it wouldn't meet our school dress code, then you shouldn't be wearing it for a campus visit.

Pay attention to your surroundings and ask questions when you are on your visit.  (We have LOTS of questions to help guide your visits on the counselor website.)  After each visit, review the list of questions you've been asking to see if there are any other questions you might want to add. Remember, you are visiting campuses to get a feeling for the atmosphere of each place – something you can’t get from a brochure or website.

As you look for which questions you want to ask, also don't forget to pay attention to/ take note of additional details and how it feels to YOU...

For example, are the dorms quiet or noisy? Do they seem crowded? Is there adequate space and light to study?  Each student looking at the same space may have a different take on those answers and how it feels for you... but since it is your future, you want to think about those aspects.  In addition to being sure you observe the surroundings, you also want to think about your perception of the college as a whole.  Can you see yourself living and learning there for the next 4 years?  Are they people you interacted with people you can imagine being friends with in the future?

If you had an interview with someone from the admissions office or if you met with anyone else formally, such as a coach or a professor, please be sure to write and send them a thank you note.

I will be excited to hear about your visit experiences if you visit colleges next weekend.

Parent Lunch & Learn Friday

The WKHS Counselors will be hosting the next session of our Lunch and Learn Series for parents this Friday, October 14th.  This session will provide information on the topic of What to do if your child has a D or an F.

As a reminder, the lunch and learns are brief presentations on a particular topic over zoom during lunch time so that parents/ guardians can join and listen in from home or work while eating their lunch.  The goal is that the presentation will take about 15 minutes and then that will give about 15 minutes for any other questions that families might have that we could address as a whole group.  We are excited about this opportunity to leverage technology and to meet families where they are so that you can get the most up to date information that we can share with you.

We will be hosting the October Lunch & Learn session at noon on Friday, October 14th.  The zoom link will be emailed to all parents and we will also post it on the Counselor Website on Friday morning.

And, I can't close without saying great job today to everyone who took the PSAT!

PSAT Reminders

Don't forget - tomorrow is the day when many Kilbourne sophomores and juniors, as well as many other students around the country, will take the PSAT.

If you are one of the students who will be taking the PSAT, you will report directly to the gymnasiums when you arrive to school on Wednesday morning.  Check in begins at 8:15am and you will need to bring your student id with you in order to check in.  Please plan on leaving your book bag and your cell phone (turned off) in your locker.  (If you bring your cell phone or smart watch with you, you will have to turn it into the staff during the test and you will be able to pick it up again after the test concludes.)

You will also need to bring number 2 pencils (no mechanical pencils allowed), a calculator, an eraser, and I would recommend a normal watch.  (Obviously, you cannot use your phones, a smart watch, or anything similar for timing.)  The test will begin promptly as soon as everyone is checked in, but no later than 9:15 and you will finish testing during 5th period and will be able to eat your lunch following testing.

You will be able to have water and a snack under your table for easy access during breaks, but you cannot eat or drink at all during the test.  As you know, the temperature in the building varies greatly.  So because we don't know what to expect in the gym, I strongly encourage that you dress in layers so that you can add a sweatshirt or take it off depending on how hot or cold you might be during testing.  As with normal school days, you are not allowed to put up a hood during testing - this is a school rule, but more importantly, it is also a testing rule you must follow.

As a reminder for all of the other students - I will be helping to administer the PSAT tomorrow, so I will not be available to meet with you.  Sorry.

Students of the Month

On Friday morning there was a ceremony to honor the October Students of the Month. The recognition as a Student of the Month can only be earned once during a student's high school career. 8 of the 15 students selected for this month's recognition were "my" students.

Congratulations to (alphabetical): Logan Aponte, Rachel Auborn, Alissa Azevado, Kathy Bartley, Danny Battle, Sophia Bollentino, Meara Couvillon and Eva Diol. I am proud of you all!

Seniors News you can Use

Seniors, this past week held multiple updates that might be very interesting for you...

1. Cap and Gown orders: Buckeye Scholastic, the company who you will use to order your cap & gown, has a 35% discount on all caps, gowns, & tassels ordered by this coming Saturday, October 15th.  Here is the link to place your order: https://buckeyescholastic.com/worthingtonkilbourne/

2. Kent State University: The admissions office at Kent State alerted us to the fact that for the month of October they will be waiving all application fees.  So you can apply for free using either the Kent State specific application or Common Application.  If they were on your list of targeted colleges, this is a great reason to get your application done and turned in this month!

3. Wittenberg University: They have announced a new tuition-free opportunity for those with significant financial need.  This is yet another reminder that just because the sticker price of private colleges is much higher than public colleges, you don't know what the end cost will be until you see what they are able to provide from a financial aid perspective.  You can read about this new tuition-free opportunity on their website: https://www.wittenberg.edu/news/10-7-22/tiger-opportunity-grant

I hope everyone who attended the Columbus Suburban College Fair today had a great time meeting with all different admissions representatives.  I'm looking forward to hearing which colleges sparked your interest!

Transcript Request Form

Seniors must request to have your transcript sent to every college where you are applying.  You will do this using the Google Form on the WKHS Counselor Website.

As you make progress with your applications, you can request your transcript at any point.  Sometimes students think that you have to wait until you have applied to request your transcript and that is not true.  In fact, as long as you have determined that you are definitely applying to a college, then it is fine to go ahead and request your transcript.  When you are applying through Common App, I will upload your transcript and it will be sent to your college automatically when you submit the rest of your application.  If you are applying through a non-Common App college then it will be sent electronically through a separate transcript program when you submit the request to us.

I know there are still a handful of my students who have invited me on Common App, but haven't submitted their transcript request form so if you aren't sure, please double check on your own Common App account because I am current on all of my Common App paperwork.

Delaware Area Career Center

When students enter 9th grade, many are excited about the different choices and opportunities available in high school. Unfortunately, the reality is that the first two years of high school really don't have all that many choices. There is, however, a great deal of flexibility as students reach their junior and senior years. One of those options includes the possibility of attending the Delaware Area Career Center.

Yesterday during US History classes, all sophomores had a chance to listen to a presentation about the Delaware Area Career Center (DACC) and the programs they have available for students. Attending DACC is a great opportunity to earn your elective credits in an area that interests you rather than taking electives that you are selecting simply because they will fill up your schedule.

It was interesting to hear about all of the different programs that are available for students.  With over 25 different programs available, there are many unique experiences and opportunities available that can give you a jump start on a career and can also stand out to colleges. If you are interested in participating in the field trip to the DACC, please be sure to return your permission slip to the counseling center soon so that you don't lose the permission slip or forget.  (Technically the deadline to return it is October 20th.)  The field trip is scheduled for Friday, November 18th.

One thing to realize about the Career Center is that they partner with 15 different districts from across Central Ohio.  So by attending the Career Center you have the chance to meet new people who have similar interests.  Each student is still involved in the activities in their home school such as sports and clubs, but this just extends that network of friends and contacts.  I will also point out that while it is a huge advantage to have that many different schools all working with the career center, it also means that the 25 spots available in each program (except Digital Design which have 50 spots available) are going to be competitive to apply and get a seat.  As a result, if this program interests you, I encourage you to make your visit in November so that you can apply right away after the field trip.

Worthington Industries Partnership

Worthington schools has established a partnership with Worthington Industries to help meet the needs of students looking for a strong work option and to help students get an advantage with a great local company.

As a district, we wanted to give all of our students and parents every opportunity to learn more directly from the Worthington Industries staff.  There will be an information meeting this Thursday, October 6th at 6:00pm in Room 227 at Thomas Worthington High School to give you a chance to learn more about the internship experience that Worthington Industries will provide to interested students.  Please note, this is a district-wide meeting for Worthington families and it will take place at TWHS (not WKHS).

Working at Worthington Industries is a great opportunity for students to have a solid, well paying job after high school.  If you are not sure if going straight to college is your plan, please consider exploring this opportunity.

Pre-ACT

Registration for students interested in taking the Pre-ACT opened today!  The Pre-ACT is the practice test for the ACT. This test is an option for sophomores and juniors.  The content of the Pre-ACT is closely tied to that of the ACT achievement test, which is used for college entrance and placement decisions. It covers the same subjects and gives you estimated ACT scores.

We will be offering the Pre-ACT for WKHS students on Thursday, November 10th in the gym.  The cost to take the test is $17.

The Pre-ACT has many benefits. It can help you get started in thinking about and planning for life after high school. It will show you areas where you may want to seek extra help. The results can also be used to help focus your test preparation to improve your ACT scores. Additionally, one of the other valuable aspects is that the Pre-ACT test includes a career component that helps identify career interests and possible career fields. For all of the students who have no idea what they might want to do some day this is one way to help come up with some ideas.

Up to 200 students can take the test and registration will run through October 21st if seats remain.  Sign up with the google form on the WKHS Counselor Website and pay through MyPayments Plus.

Columbus Suburban College Fair

What are you doing next Sunday?  I hope your plan includes attending the Columbus Suburban College Fair!  Held at Otterbein University.

The Columbus Suburban College Fair is the largest, local fall college fair and is a great opportunity for students to learn more about colleges of interest.  This year, the College Fair will take place on Sunday, October 9th at the Otterbein University Clements Center from 1-3:30.

Who should attend the college fair?  It is ideal for students who are just starting the process to begin thinking about where they might want to apply to college in the future. College fairs can provide the perfect opportunity to interact with a large number of college admissions officers all in one setting.  Granted, this will just be a quick snapshot, and at times can be overwhelming, but it is a great chance for 9th - 11th graders to begin the process of thinking about what you are seeking in a college and identifying schools which might be a good fit for what you're hoping to find.  And attending a college fairs also provides a great way to expand your horizons well beyond the awareness of the most common colleges you have heard your siblings or friends talk about.

All students are asked to register with Strive Scan by visiting www.strivefair.com because this will allow for you to have a bar code specific to you.  Then, when you are at the college fair next weekend and you talk to a college that interests you, they can simply scan your barcode and that will allow the college to know of your interest. I promise you, this is a MAJOR improvement over 5-10 years ago when students had to hand write out interest cards at each college table.

I encourage you to check out the Columbus Suburban College Fair information on the front page of the WKHS Counselor website for more information about colleges who will attend and parking.  And next week, after the fair, I will be anxious to hear about what colleges sparked your interest the most!

October 1st

Holy cow!  Can you believe it is October 1st?!?  This is a key date for seniors for many reasons...

The FAFSA opens today (October 1st).  The government and colleges have moved FAFSA's opening date and due dates up in order to give students and families more time to be able to have their financial aid offers and consider the implications when making the decision about which college will be the best fit financially.  The FAFSA for current high school seniors will be based upon the 2021 tax returns.  You can access the FAFSA here:  https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa

When students and parents are completing the FAFSA, you will each need to have an FSAID number.  This number will allow you to electronically sign your FAFSA and in the future it would let you sign promissory notes as well as complete future FAFSA's.

The student and parent will each create their own separate numbers.  You cannot use the same e-mail addresses for the creation of the numbers so if you don't have an e-mail address and have been using your parents e-mail in the past then this is the ideal time to create your own e-mail account.

You will make your own challenge questions to help you access your number if you forget it in the future so it is important to write down those challenge questions and answers to make sure you will remember it down the road.  I recommend that students and parents make a folder related to FAFSA where you store all of this information so that you will always have it when you might need it.

If you forget to create an FSAID number prior to completing your FAFSA, it will still have a link for you to be able to go back and create one, but ideally you should create it ahead of time.

Here is a link to create your FSAID numbers:  https://studentaid.gov/fsa-id/create-account/launch

To help you with the college financial aid process we will host a Financial Aid Meeting on Thursday, October 6th at 7pm in the Auditorium.  We are fortunate to welcome Faith Phillips, a financial aid director for OSU Newark and COTC, as our guest presenter.  This is just an evening targeting senior students and parents because the FAFSA will be changing again next year so it is NOT a night that younger families would want to attend.

Why else is October 1st important?  We are now in the 1 month countdown to the November 1st early application deadline for so many colleges.  So you have a month to finalize your applications.  Additionally, remember, you should be asking for any recommendation letters a month in advance which means TODAY!  So, if you haven't already, please be sure to ask your teacher (or me) about writing a recommendation letter for you on Monday!
