Confidentiality

Having safe adults that you can talk to and trust is an important aspect of navigating life as a high schooler. In addition to your parents and teachers, I hope to work to be able to earn your trust so that I can also be one of those safe people in your life.

It is important to know that there are limits to confidentiality. Some of those limits are long-standing, consistent aspects. If you are at risk to yourself or someone else, I must report it. If someone is harming you (abuse or neglect), I must report it.

What is new in limits to confidentiality are some of the new Ohio laws that I must follow. If you share information with me related to gender - such as wanting to use a different name or pronouns, then I must share that information with your parents.

Another new requirement within the Ohio law is that I must notify your parents if you have had a "substantial change" academically, physically, or emotionally.

Knowing that your trust is important, I want to make sure you understand that these new laws and requirements are in place. All of it is with the goal of helping to make sure you have as many positive, supportive adults in your life as possible. So if you have any questions about confidentiality, please don't hesitate to ask!

And We're Underway...

The first day of school was a success! Hopefully you loved all of your classes, found everything without a problem, enjoyed connecting with your friends, and are looking forward to a great year ahead.

I enjoyed having a chance to say hello to a lot of students - most of whom were coming to discuss schedule change requests. Remember, we cannot change teachers. If classes are full, I cannot overload them. And, in what seemed to be one of the surprises to a lot of kids today, not every class is offered every period. In fact, many classes are only offered 1-2 times in total which can make it really difficult to change schedules at all.

If you are seeking a schedule change now that school is in session you will need to fill out the Schedule Change Request form and get it signed by a parent. You have until Monday to make any changes, but after that you are in the classes for the semester.

I am excited for another year to be underway and I'll be so happy when all of you are in and settled in your classes and no longer feeling like you need to make changes to your schedules because it will also allow you to build connections with your teachers and classmates. I hope this will be your best year yet!

Back to School

Your summer is officially over and tonight is a School Night... which means many of you most likely have to try to completely flip your sleep schedule.  I know it will be hard, but please try to go to bed early tonight because the first few weeks of adjusting to being back at school full time tend to be exhausting.

I am looking forward to seeing all of you tomorrow!  It will be so good to have everyone back in the building again. Kilbourne is a great place to work, but it truly is amazing because of our students and so it will be so nice to have you all together with us again. Even just having the freshmen in the building today brought life and spark back to the building. Lexi is definitely anxious to see all of you!  She doesn't understand where her friends went for the summer so be sure to stop by the counseling center and say hi to Lexi and me.

Dear Seniors...

Dear Seniors in the Class of 2025,

Today was your last day of high school. With every senior that I saw and had the chance to talk with yesterday and today, the constant theme was reflecting back on how fast high school went. I completely agree with that sentiment! It doesn't seem like it has been 4 years since you all first came to WKHS and yet, here you are ready to graduate and take on the next adventures in your life.

I have done a lot of reflecting about your class and the word that comes to my mind most of all is RESILIENT. You have adjusted, adapted, overcome, endured, and through it all you have done it with joy, compassion, and kindness. In a lot of ways when I think of resilient students I think of this characteristic for the big aspects you have faced in school whether that was transitioning to high school with masks and then to no masks, dealing with the massive upheaval of construction, fighting for creative parking options, slugging through difficult content or challenging courses, balancing classes at WKHS and on college campuses, helping your friends, competing with your whole heart on athletic fields, and dedicating so much time to perform well on stage. But I also think of your resiliency in how you faced personal challenges - learning a new language, fighting cancer, dealing with the death of a parent or other beloved family member, struggling to find your place and where you belonged, moving to a new school, managing the stress of hard family situations at home, and so much more.

There are no words that can adequately express how thankful I am that you have allowed me to walk alongside you in this journey. Thank you for opening up your hearts and your lives to me. Please know that you have made me a better person and I will always be grateful that I had the privilege to know and work with you for the last four years!

You have a very bright future ahead and I cannot wait to see the impact you will have. Congratulations!

Love, Miss Abbott

PS - Enjoy your day off tomorrow and I will see you all Friday afternoon for Graduation Rehearsal!

Teacher Appreciation Week

This week is national Teacher Appreciation Week!  WKHS is blessed to have a staff of incredible teachers who are committed to their student's success - not only in the classroom, but also in life.  I can think of so many examples of teachers going the extra mile to help students.  They are often found: spending time before or after school reviewing material with students, cheering on kids at concerts and games, responding to e-mails and text messages on evenings and weekends to clarify questions, developing exciting and engaging learning experiences, writing beautiful recommendation letters, listening to a student who needs to talk after a bad day, and countless other examples that make an impact in ways big and small.

Looking back at my own life I remain grateful for the teachers I had - for what they taught me, the care they showed, and the impact they had on my life.  I remember those who gave us challenging assignments that pushed me and still impact how I look at life today.  I remember the teachers who believed in me and helped me to develop the confidence to chase after my dreams.  I'll be honest - I don't remember all of my teachers.  But I suspect that there are other students who fondly remember those teachers who I can barely recall.  I think that is the beauty of education - hopefully every student has at least 1 teacher who they feel believes in and cares about them and a teacher who holds them accountable and pushes them to learn and grow.

I suspect that you all have some teacher that has made a difference in your life.  I don't know which Kilbourne (or even elementary or middle school) teachers stand out to you most as being the ones who challenge you to be YOUR best every day, but I hope you will consider taking time this week to say thanks to at least one of the teachers at Kilbourne who has made a positive impact on your life.  You never know - maybe your kind words to them will be exactly the encouragement they needed today and your words will stay with them for years to come.

Advisory Council

Do you have people that you trust and can turn to for advice, guidance and direction? People who you know are going to be able to point out areas where you might need to change so you can grow and improve? And people who can encourage, support and celebrate your successes with you?

I firmly believe that having a trusted circle of people in your life is valuable to our growth as humans. And I also think it is important to have that feedback for our school counseling program. This was the second year of having an Advisory Council to help give feedback and ideas to help guide our school counseling team to help make our program and services the most impactful for our students as possible.

This year our Advisory Council members included (in alphabetical order by last name): Erica Backhurst, Dan Beck, Esther Boatemah, Sarah Cain, Kate Campbell, Kristen Collins, Noemi Garcia, Kaylee Guadalupe, Roshi Jamshidi, Rick Kellner, Tania Leal, Stephanie Matson, Angie Pope, Daniel Robey, and Tara Schumacher. They are parents, students, teachers and administrators who gave up their time to help learn about our programs and offerings and provide feedback, suggestions and guidance.

The Advisory Council met 4 times throughout the year and each time I was nervous about if our agenda would meet the needs and expectations of the committee members. And after each meeting I walked away excited and energized about the input and suggestions that they were sharing with us. Our counseling team does not take for granted the help and expertise from each of these valued stakeholders.

We met for the final time this year last week and unfortunately the fire alarm went off and we had to cut our time together short, but we did try to grab a quick picture with many of the advisory council members as we were leaving to exit the building. And since we didn't get to formally say it at the end of the meeting, I would like to offer it here - THANK YOU to all of the Advisory Council members for taking the time out of your busy lives to meet with us! We are so grateful for your partnership and we thank you for helping to make us stronger because of your input!

Long Weekend Ahead

We have a 4-day long weekend ahead!  I am sure that many of you (like me) are excited about having a 4-day weekend.  I would like to challenge you to be intentional during the weekend and select just 1 thing that you will do over the long weekend to spend your time wisely in helping set you up for the long or short term future.

Want some ideas on what you can do?  If you are behind on work in any of your classes, then you can spend some time working on school stuff in order to get caught up.  You can relax and really focus on recharging so that you can mentally transition yourself to a better place.  You can do some of the career exploration inventories such as YouScience.  Or perhaps you would be able to start exploring colleges more either by searching their online information or going and making an actual college visit... colleges are still in session on Friday so that can be a great day to be able to see the campus while students are around and going to classes.

You don't need to do all of those things.  In fact, my whole point of suggesting that you pick 1 thing is the hope that you will be intentional about doing something that involves taking steps to help yourself.  If you try to do everything at once then it won't help you feel as if the long weekend was a restful experience and I do hope that it will be an enjoyable weekend even as you are focused on getting other things done.

The Week Ahead

This is definitely going to be a WILD week in the Counseling Center.

As a reminder, on Monday and Tuesday the counselors will meet with every freshman student during their English classes and on Wednesday and Thursday we will meet with every sophomore during their History classes.  The good news is that we will get to spend a little bit of time with a lot of kids, but the bad news is that there won't be any free time available during the day for us to see other students.

Friday will be focused on meetings to catch up with student meetings and, of course, the next two weeks will be filled with lots more junior registration meetings.

In addition to the happenings in the Counseling Center, this week Student Council is also hosting a Spirit Week ahead of Saturday's Winter Formal.  The theme for each day will be:

Monday: PJ Day

Tuesday: College Day

Wednesday: Pink Day

Thursday: Class Color Day (9th grade: Blue, 10th grade: White, 11th grade: Black, 12th grade: Gray). Thursday evening is also parent/ teacher conferences.

Friday: Jersey/ Sports Teams Day

Friday will also be a modified bell schedule for a pep assembly which is a student/ staff basketball game. (I'm sure the staff are hoping the refs will cheat to allow the staff to be able to compete with the students.)

Student Council will also be doing fundraisers and special connection opportunities in the Commons so be sure to participate and check it all out!

Snow Day Joy

Did you enjoy having the snow day today?!? It was definitely a nice bonus day following the holiday break and hopefully just having a 4 day week will make the transition back to school a little easier.

Another reminder, as we start this new semester, please take a moment and make sure that you are ready to hit the ground running.  Spend a little bit of time tonight to clean out your bookbag, organize your notes, get new supplies if needed, find your planner and start filling it out, and make the most out of each day in front of you.  I am excited to see what you will accomplish in the classroom and beyond over the next few months.  As always, if you need help in your classes, please reach out to your teachers, utilize the support from the Academic Assistants, and see me for additional resources.

I am excited to see you tomorrow.  For the record, Lexi is even more excited than anyone can imagine as she has desperately missed being around all of you!  I hope you will stop by and see me to check in and let me know how your break went... it feels like it has been so long since I have had the chance to talk with all of you and to hear about your lives.

And, for tonight... get some sleep!  It is going to seem REALLY EARLY tomorrow when the alarms start going off!  (That is the only thing I am not looking forward to about being back at school tomorrow.)

Winter Break

One of the downsides of ending the semester with exams is that it impacts my ability to see as many of you before break as I would like.  I hope your final few exams went well and that you are ready to head into break with the chance to relax and enjoy some time with your family and friends.  Most of all, I hope that you will be safe over break and have fun!

For what it is worth, I will also be off and not checking emails and rarely (if at all) updating the blog as I will also be trying to enjoy the time with my family and enjoying some down time.

Congratulations again on successfully completing exams and your first semester!

WKHS Counselors Website

I mention the Kilbourne Counselor website often, but I still feel like it deserves to have a post all of it's own.  When we created the counselor website we wanted to provide students and parents with an easy, one-stop place, to get as many of the resources and information answers that you regularly need.

Have you visited www.wkhscounselors.com lately?

We work really hard to keep the website current and so it is updated on a regular basis.  The site features information about succeeding academically, college/ career pursuits, and personal/ social information resources.  So often people ask me questions and I point them to the website for the answer because it is the easiest place to find the information over waiting until you are back at school and going and finding the paper version of the forms, etc.

Take a moment and check it out and please be sure to bookmark the site so that you can refer back to it often.  And, if there is anything that you think it should include but don’t see on the site, please let me know so that we can add it.

Of course, I have to acknowledge that none of the counselors are very website savvy and so while I have literally read a "Joomla for Dummies" book to try to help create the website, none of what you see would be possible without the expertise, know-how, dedication and countless hours of time that Mr. Estice from Phoenix Middle School has contributed.

Election Stress

People are in very different places related to their views and feelings about the election. Some people hold strong opinions about one candidate or another and others don’t care at all and are just relieved that the commercials and pop up ads are going to end soon.  Life as a teenager is already stressful and the election is just one more component that can be adding to the stress in the lives of many students.

I am not sure if we will wake up tomorrow knowing the outcome of the election or if things will still be too close to call, but I do anticipate that there will be LOTS of people on TV and social media stirring up drama, emotions and stress.  Remember, political talk has dominated social media and the news for months leading up to today and so it is normal to expect that this will continue in the months following the election as well.  It is helpful to remember that ratings and clicks matter to those working in the news media and while they are trying to inform us about the news, they are also trying to boost their ratings at the same time.  As a result, it is important to be careful to prevent yourself from getting sucked down into a dark place by watching too much news or by engaging in unproductive, unhealthy interactions.  Worrying can give you something to do, but often it isn't helping you.  So once you acknowledge that your anxiety is there for a reason, it is important to shift your focus to things within your control.

How can you do this?  By staying present.  Feel what you are feeling – whatever that might be and allow those feelings to have the space in your body and mind.  Express those feelings in ways that are safe, healthy and productive.  Actively work to embrace and spread joy as a way to counter the negativity born from the negative political battles.  You control what you contribute to society, which can be as simple as saying hi to your neighbor or holding open the door for a stranger.  You also control what you do to help yourself.  Below are some notes from the Crisis Text Line on ways that you can help yourself during this stressful time.

Acknowledge and accept your feelings. It is completely normal to feel stressed or disappointed. Recognize and accept these feelings and allow yourself to process everything. If you’re sad, be sad.

Talk to others. Remember that you’re not the only person feeling this way. Try not to isolate yourself and open up to someone you trust.

Write it down. If you don’t feel like talking, write it down. Pouring your feelings out on paper is a good way to unravel your thoughts. If you don’t have access to pen and paper, there are great journaling apps. Most phones also have a “notes” feature you could use.

Unplug from the news and social media. Put some space between yourself and the election coverage to prevent an overload of emotions. It’s understandable to want to be in the know, but set a timer for how long you’ll indulge in the media. Invest your spare time into self-care instead.

Practice self-care. Self-care is extremely important in all aspects of life. This could mean curling up with your favorite book, watching your favorite shows, exercising, or taking a nice, long, bath. It can be anything as long as it is an activity that disconnects your thoughts from current events.

Regarding self-care, I will add to that suggestion to at least do the easy things – move your body, stretch and take some deep breaths.  It sounds simple, but it makes a difference.

Over time, as you work to understand and adjust to the stress and the election outcomes, I would like to remind you that this is more of an “AND” situation – not an “or” situation.  You can be disappointed about the outcome AND still have hope that better days will be ahead.  You can be relieved by the outcome AND still recognize that others are not feeling that same way.  You can be frustrated by the opposing beliefs that someone else around you holds AND still choose to be accepting of them as people.  We all have individual responsibilities and steps to take to make the world a better place – so please, in the weeks ahead, do nice things for yourself and the people in your life including those who share your perspective and those who do not.

Before I end, I want to share that part of what I love about my job as a school counselor is that I get to know so many of you well.  I love your passion, your intellect, your interests, your excitement, and the fact that NONE of you are exactly like anyone else.  You each have your own unique outlook and perspective.  You each have value that you contribute in ways that only you can.  In my heart, in my office, and in our school, you are respected and appreciated for all of the diverse backgrounds, ideas and outlooks that you hold.   My greatest wish is that each of you will know that YOU ALL MATTER HERE!

Articles of Interest

I read a LOT of college related articles and watch a lot of webinars related to college and school counseling in general, not to mention listening to podcasts and reading journals and books.  But periodically I think, "I bet my students would want to read this."  And sometimes it is an article that relates to a particular student or situation we have been discussing and so I will forward it just to that person.  Other times it is something I think could interest many people and so I save the link in my notes about my blog and when that list of interesting articles starts to grow too long, I try to share the links with you all here on my blog.  Today is one of those days.

Read through the topics mentioned below and if you are interested in learning more about them, click on the link and check out the article.

Confidentiality & Seeing Me

It is very important to me that I work to earn your trust every day. During high school there are times when you may wonder if there is anyone who cares and is willing to listen to what you are going through and I want to remind you that I am here for you. Please remember that what you say to me is confidential between us unless you are a risk to yourself or someone else or if someone is hurting you in which case I am required to report it.

If you want to meet with me - just drop by my office! That is honestly the BEST way to meet with me. You don't need to schedule an appointment in advance. I'm generally around before and after school as well as during your lunch or academic prep/ option periods for you to stop in and chat. You don't need a big reason to come down and say Hi. I am happy to see you even if you just wanted to tell me how well or how poorly you did on a test that day. If I am busy meeting with another student or parent - you can stop back down, leave a pass for me, send me a message on Remind, or send me an email to let me know you want to see me. If I don't know who you are and you have left a pass that leads me to search for you in the commons please try to help me out and let me know that "you" are the student. (I know, not always easy, but if you left a pass and I haven't tracked you down that day or the following day, chances are I can't find you in the commons - so please come back!)

Don't forget I have candy and toys in my office - so it is always worth just stopping by to say hello. :-)

New Names and Faces

Everything in life changes.  That is just how it works and as we start the school year we are all going to be feeling and seeing many of these changes within our own building.

1. We have lots of new staff members joining WKHS. (Which also means that some of your past teachers may no longer be at Kilbourne.)

As you were looking at your schedules you may have noticed names of your teachers that you didn't recognize and perhaps that is because they are new. Included in the list of new staff are:

  • Ms. Ayesh (Math)
  • Ms. Brienza (Social Studies)
  • Mrs. Carey (English/ Intervention Specialist)
  • Ms. Geygan (Science)
  • Mrs. Kelso (English)
  • Mrs. Leiding (Assistant Principal)
  • Mr. Marks (Science)
  • Mrs. Orlins (Math Academic Assistant)
  • Mr. Price (English)
  • Mr. Ritchey (Science)
  • Mrs. Spencer (School Counselor Intern)
  • Mr. Sunderhaus (Math)

2. We had several staff members get married over the summer so you may see their "old" last name or their "new" last name, but they are still the same great teachers.
  • Ms. Biskner is now Mrs. Ghiloni
  • Miss Karlock is now Mrs. Larson

3. The Room Numbers for the upstairs classrooms have all changed.  It will be ok... there will be maps. But some rooms that you always referenced by number are definitely different.  For example, the tiered study hall room that used to be called 207 is now 201.

4. There is a new upstairs hallway that runs parallel to the hall by the balconies so now that will give you 3 hallways that run across the long width of the building upstairs. Again, it sounds strange, but there will be maps on your first day and once you walk it I'm sure it will quickly make sense.

Construction will continue all year long so there will be lots of adjustments and changes as rooms get finished and others get closed down for remodeling.  Just try to breathe through the stress of it all and know that in the end it will all be worth it.

You Made It!

Congratulations!  You have officially made it to the end of the 2023-24 School Year.  I still feel like we just started the semester and I blined and somehow here we are.  I hope that you are proud of how the year went and that you are pleased with how you finished the year academically.  Enjoy the end of the start of your summer and please stay safe!

A Letter to my Seniors

Dear Seniors,

Today, as you walked out of the doors at Kilbourne, you marked the end of a huge journey that you have been on for the last 13 years.  Yes, of course, you will be back on Friday morning for graduation rehearsal (don't forget you have to be in the auditorium at 9am).  But studying, doing homework, taking notes during classes, seeing all of the same kids in the halls day after day - those moments have now come to a close.

To say that I am proud of you is such an understatment.  You started high school with virtual learning and blue/ green days.  You demonstrated your ability to be resilient as you adjusted and adapted in so many ways over the last 4 years.  You learned and grew, building friendships, supporting teammates, and accomplishing goals in the classroom, on the athletic fields, and through clubs and artistic endeavors.

Several seniors took the time to stop by my office for one last time before leaving and there were more smiles than tears (although there were definitely both).  And all I could think as each student left my office was, "thank you."  I am so grateful to each student who has been willing to share in their lives with me.  I truly know that I am a better person because of you all.

Enjoy the joy and celebration of being FINISHED with high school!

Congratulations!  Love, Miss Abbott

Senior Wisdom

Seniors, 5 days left... it's getting real and starting to hit people how quickly this year is winding down.  I have had a chance to glance through some of the senior survey question insights and I really appreciate all of the feedback and impressions you have shared with us as a staff.  I am going to challenge you to share some of your key words of wisdom with the underclass students as well...

Over the next few weeks I suspect you will spend some time reflecting back on your high school career.  As you do, please consider passing along some of your words of wisdom.  You have created a positive impression and, as a result, many of the younger students look up to and admire you.  I'm sure you can remember some of the older students who made an impression on your life and this is your opportunity to pass along the gift of your wisdom to those who will continue in high school.  Let the younger students know what you are glad you did, what you wish you would have done differently, and any other suggestions and tips you'd given them to help them to be successful and make the most of their high school years.  As you share your insights, you may never fully realize the difference that you have made, but you can be sure that your legacy will continue to make a positive impact in the years ahead.

And, to the 9th-11th grade students, don't miss this opportunity to ask seniors for their insights and the awarenesses that they have now.  Chances are they have learned many of their most key lessons through overcoming challenges - if you can learn from their experiences you will be far better off in the long run.

Free Healthcare Opportunities

There are certain healthcare related steps that all students must complete in order to comply with school requirements.

Probably most familiar to students and families is the sports physical.  Any student hoping to participate in band or a sport, must have a current, updated sports physical on file every year.  There are free sports physicals being offered by OhioHealth Sports Medicine.  These will take place on May 20, 21, and 22nd in Grove City, Westerville, and Dublin.  You can use the QR code on this page to access the full list of locations, times and to sign up.

Additionally, the state requires all students to have an updated meningococcal vaccine by August of their senior year.  The requirement is that one dose of the Meningococcal (MenACWY) vaccine must be given on or after the age of 16.  Proof of vaccination is due prior to senior year by the State of Ohio.  In order to help students fulfill this requirement, a Free Vaccine Clinic will be held at WKHS on Friday, May 3 from 8:30am-12:30pm.  This is a free opportunity for students from the Columbus Public Health Department to get this requirement completed during a school day.  Parents do not need to be present, but a consent form is required.  Consent forms can be picked up from Nurse Julie in the health office at school.  It is important to note that the consent forms are due back by this Friday, April 19th so that the Columbus Public Health department has time to process the forms.  So, if you are going to take advantage of this free opportunity, you need to act right away!

In addition to the Meningococcal vaccine, they will also be offering influenza, Tdap, and HPV vaccines for free to students who want/ need them.

Any questions about the free vaccine clinic or the meningococcal vaccine requirement can be directed to WKHS Nurse Julie at jgarner@wscloud.org.
